How to compare home insurance policies

Compare coverage first, then price. Two policies at different prices are only comparable if their limits and deductibles match. Your declarations page, usually page 1 or 2 of your policy, lists every number you need.

What is a declarations page?

The summary page of your policy: your carrier, the policy period and renewal date, your dwelling limit (often listed as Coverage A), your deductibles and your liability limit. It's usually page 1 or 2 of your policy.

Which numbers should I compare?

Your dwelling limit (it should cover the cost to rebuild, not your home's market value), your all-perils deductible, any separate wind or hurricane deductible, and your liability limit. A percentage wind deductible is a share of your dwelling limit, so a 2% deductible on $240,000 is $4,800.

What deductible should I choose?

A higher deductible lowers your premium. Pick one you could pay tomorrow. Your agent shows you the options side by side.

When should I shop my policy?

Before it renews. Add your renewal date and we'll quote before you renew. Our in-house agency compares 20 carriers, and clients save 20% on average.
